The way to improve the worth of formation within the course

What contributes to the added value of the course training? One would be tempted to answer directly: “content, goals, learning situations, learning support …”. This article invites you to discover other aspects that seem marginal, but still often explain the effect of training in the medium or long term.

“I was there” training.

Some trainings in the broadest sense of the word are founding acts. Seminars, conferences, workshops have thus become very popular venues in the history of ideas, filled like rock concerts. We hurry there, we don’t see anything. There is no interaction, it’s hard to hear … But those who have been there have been talking about it for decades. is it training We can bet yes. Those who have been lucky enough to be there will discuss it around, learn more, deepen speakers’ thoughts and feel legitimate to discuss shared ideas …

Among the moments of training and teaching that have value, some are paradoxically incomprehensible. Let’s listen to Antoine Compagnon in his closing lesson at the College de France about the seminar of the prominent psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan, who is still legendary decades later.

When I was a student at l’X, many of us went to Jacques Lacan’s seminar at the Faculty of Law, place du Panthéon. He spoke in topology time. We tried to understand; we didn’t understand anything. However, I was overwhelmed by the risks he took, not in a prophetic tone, but in the sudden turn of his speech. Sometimes he had nothing to say and after a few rumbles he was silent. [extemporanée : non préparé d’avance.]

Antoine Compagnon continues with a personal interpretation: the teacher must disappoint, that is, he must give the feeling that there is still something to discover, this time alone, by shaking off the sources and original texts. It’s all in “We’ve tried to understand,” which makes the very moment of training the starting point.

How to do it ?

Formations are sometimes interested in staying unique and rare moments. On the contrary, the possibilities of video retransmission, distributed and accessible documents, accessible slideshows can contribute to the trivialization of the surviving moment. Those who go to training are not the lucky few, but those who are not smart enough to gain support otherwise. In a previous article, we mentioned this return “live”, which brings value to the surviving moment.

In a broader sense, training time must also be and event and collective experience. This also applies to distance training. The highlight was also the first mooky and then those that were built on exchanges, productions and community animation. As they talk about it, the connections and debates spread, they share on the networks, the participants continue to learn.

“New beginning” courses.

Some trainings are initiations, represent a key moment in life and have a very strong symbolic value. Those who sign up or follow the course do not plan to continue as before. From a commitment theory perspective, this is the first step to changing, reorienting or mobilizing skills. In the extreme case, the important moment is not training, but the choice of registration. Management, business, facilitation or key skills training is therefore a commitment to yourself and others to develop or engage in that skill.

Training in a service project, educational project or use of collaboration tools gives the beginning of a series of meetings and teamwork.

Nothing captures this idea better and simpler than collections of books, which build themselves as the beginning of a change in behavior. Let’s remember the “It’s decided, I’m starting” collection from the Larousse editions.

What to do ?

In order to add value to the training, the centers can provide the required horizon and write their goals and content in several stages.

Domestika, which builds its business on an online training catalog, organizes its trailers as follows. One or two first minutes acquaint the coach with the professional activity. He always seems filled, relaxed in his art, and a few seconds is enough to arouse the desire to settle for the master. We continue with the presentation of goals, structured, clear and distant from any pedagogical jargon. Content flow follows. These are small steps that all have meaning. Finally, the videos describe the final production, a “masterpiece” that participants will be able to achieve as a summary. In three or four minutes, the viewer hears a saying; “That’s all, I’m going.”

To continue the theory of commitment, end the session by asking everyone to say what they have retained and, above all, what they plan to do next Monday to implement the benefits of the course.

The key to a new professional life

The reference to a “new beginning” applies all the more when training is mandatory for the pursuit of a professional activity. Lift operators, real estate agents, bankers or drivers who transport goods must receive training in order to continue their activities in France.

In this case, if the training has value, it is mainly because it allows access to the position or to maintain it. Paradoxically, since it is an “external” motivation, it does not support learning or discovery. Confirming training is more important than training. Questions from trainees sometimes relate mainly to the method of evaluation, success, the possibility of correction or dismissal in case of failure in the test.

If these trainings have value, it is also because we carefully preserve the evidence. Losing a certificate when moving even after ten years can be a real tragedy.

What to do ?

To bring value to training, we can take care of certificates and proof of success. Group photos during activities, issuing certificates of achievement or participation, badges can help evaluate time spent.

It is not unnecessary to take care of the aesthetic side of these documents. There are several models on the Canva site that can inspire you, even though some of them look like death announcements…

the key to the position or to remain active

Paradigm change training

The added value of training is also measured by what it brings in terms of transformation. Let us recall the distinction between ‘assimilation’ and ‘accommodation’ proposed by Jean Piaget. An internship can provide us with additional knowledge or know-how that will expand or update our skills. We will talk about assimilation.

On the contrary, another may shake our ways of thinking, the vision of our profession or our audience. This will be accommodation.

For a trainer, there is a difference between getting acquainted with software that allows you to download a attendance list, a list of participants, and enter your goals, and an internship that would change your vision of what to “learn” or the teacher-student relationship. .

Assimilation, which consists in developing knowledge and know-how on a model that has already been created for the learner, is less important than adaptation, which forces the learner to shake what he or she thought he or she has mastered. These features are sometimes more painful, but more durable.

Some trainings change our concept of our profession

What to do ?

In order to bring value to the training, this distinction can enlighten us. It is not unnecessary to recall values, problems and make sense, even if the training seems to be just a technical update. We can train cloud storage services by explaining the rules, but we can also put security issues, impact on working relationships, hierarchy, environment into perspective…

Create a network

A little modesty at the end. The value of training is sometimes … out of training. The meetings it promotes and the projects that are built there play an important role.

In The world at your fingertips, Maylis de Kerangal presents three students from an art school in Belgium. They share a rental and take intensive courses in trompe-l’oeil and painted scenery in a cinema or theater. The course is challenging and effective, but it is also imitation, mutual help during and after training, mutual inspirations that allow these young adults to build and develop their professionalism.

What to do ?

Support for the exchange of e-mails, Instagram, Twitter or LinkedIn coordinates allows you to continue training by other means, anchor it in practice and consolidate the commitments made there.

Asking the elders, letting them testify, staging their journey is also very helpful and inspiring, in addition to hospitality.

These few guidelines lead us to the question of training amplitude. It starts before the regrouping, goes beyond. What makes it worthwhile is not limited to what the trainers think they will bring into it, nor what the participants are looking for. It is an aircraft that is built with passengers in full flight, and recipes such as deterministic approaches have little effect on the added value they bring.
