What’s a STAPS license?

In 2022, 626,000 high school students enrolled at the Parcoursup. More than 160,000 of them have chosen a STAPS license. The student decodes the contents of the STAPS license for you so that you can make an informed decision.

The STAPS license is still just as attractive for high school students, but it is also an elective course. Like other courses, the STAPS license is organized over six semesters (180 European credits). She confirms acquiring a knowledge and skills base in a multidisciplinary field. However, many high school students enroll in STAPS out of a passion for sports without being adequately informed or prepared for this university degree.

STAPS licensed, sports in the background

Several beliefs about the STAPS license are still ingrained in the minds of families: the license would only accept high-level athletes, as most of the time would be devoted to sports practice; and study would lead to the pursuit of a single profession: physical education teacher. And even so …

To enter the STAPS license, sports level is one of the parameters on the same level as scientific, literary and sports animation. In the first year of the STAPS license, the sport does not take up most of the teaching volume. “Students will be able to gain a fine, intellectual and cultural knowledge of sport in general. The aim is to learn in sport,” said Guillaume Richard, responsible for the 3 STAPS license, specializing in sports management at UPHF (Polytechnic University of Hauts-de-France). ).

The first-year class takes place in an amphitheater, often from 8 am to 5 pm, attended by hundreds of students. Many are disappointed, unprepared or ill-informed in the first semester.

In addition, the STAPS license opens until other sectors of activity such as sports management, events (organization of sporting events – including the increasingly popular e-sport -), help for the elderly or disabled, etc.

How are STAPS university courses organized?

The STAPS license is valid for three years and knowledge is assessed by continuous assessment and amounts at the end of each semester. The first year of bachelor’s study, which is very general, serves as a common ground and aims to provide students with a theoretical culture in sports. The subjects taught are diverse: psychology, anatomy / functional anatomy, physiology, social and cultural history of sport, myology, arthrology / osteology, anthropology, sociology of leisure time, analysis of the body in motion, etc., not forgetting interdisciplinary lessons. (digital and communication tools, English …).

Depending on the university, TD (supervised work) and TP (practical work) appear in the first, second or third year. Sports experience has increased over the last three years or has remained the same over the last three years. In Valenciennes, Guillaume Richard, for example, points out that “third-year students choose four sports practices: two in the first semester and two in the second semester.”

In the second year, students choose a field whose teaching represents approximately 40% of the total hourly volume. In the third year, these courses reach almost 80% of the total in the 5th semester, then 100% in the 6th semester.

Possible specializations in the STAPS license

The STAPS license comes with five possible specializations. But beware, they are not available at all universities, so find out when choosing an orientation.

The APAS specialty (adapted physical activity and health) provides the skills needed to participate in the design, management and evaluation of prevention, rehabilitation and / or integration programs through adapted physical activity (APA) for people with disabilities in the broadest sense (motor, sensory, mental or even social deficiencies) or chronic illness (obesity, diabetes, hypertension, cancer, etc.).

The special education and motor skills develops skills for teaching sports and artistic physical activities in primary or secondary school.

The specialization in sports training allows different audiences. Opportunities are mainly in the professional context of clubs, federations, training centers or physical reconditioning. Professions revolve around mental preparation, performance, designing training programs based on accurate diagnosis.

The special ergonomics and engine power leads to work on improving sports equipment and optimizing the athlete’s performance.

The specialization in sports management training in professions associated with the management of small and medium-sized structures or with participation in the management of larger organizations, whether in sports federations or in sports event agencies or community structures.

Do L.AS STAPS and enter the health study

For those who are interested in studying health, know that there is also a STAPS license path to physiotherapeutic studies. Admission is based on a selection exam after the confirmed first year of STAPS. Some universities have partnered with physical schools to allow certain students to enter the sector, such as Montpellier. “This agreement currently allows 20 selected STAPS students to enter a school of physiotherapy“, Says Christelle Koechlin-Ramonatxo, lecturer and manager of L.AS education and physiotherapy courses at UFR STAPS.

But doing L.AS STAPS is also a way to join the MMOP study (medicine, medicine, odontology, pharmacy). Students enrolled in this option take STAPS university courses as well as smaller medical courses. In order to have a chance to enter the second year of health studies, you must complete all teaching units.

Prerequisites for entering a STAPS license

You will need to register for Parcoursup to integrate the STAPS license. The courses are looking for versatile, curious students with a sports culture. “A good STAPS student profile is someone who has experience in sports practice and animation, but has good grades in other subjects. This demonstrates dynamism, motivation and curiosity for all types of knowledge and disciplines. The student must not forget that our training is multidisciplinary, and therefore it is rich, ”concludes Christelle Koechlin-Ramonatxo.

Guillaume Richard adds: “You have to work, be independent, strict, self-disciplined. High school students coming to college are often unable to take notes and are not used to listening to lectures for two to three hours. You have to be prepared for campus. ”
