the decline within the variety of candidates is a priority for the career

A mild wind of panic blew on Tuesday, May 10, when the first capabilities of the capes were announced. Mathematics, a discipline that has been lacking for many years, is not full and even less than usual: out of 1,035 open positions, only 816 candidates are suitable. From the beginning, therefore, more than 200 candidates are missing, ie twice the vacancies in 2021. Even before the results of the oral interviews, where some will inevitably be rejected. The figures are also worrying in German: only 83 candidates are entitled to 215 open positions (compared to 177 candidates in 2021).

The day before, SNUipp-FSU, the majority association of school teachers, rang those who are eligible for first-degree competition: there are fewer of them than usual, at a worrying level in several regions. This competition, organized at academic level, has always made a big difference, with significant difficulties in recruiting in Ile-de-France. But in areas that future teachers a priori avoid, such as Montpellier Academy, the eligibility rate has dropped to 1.5 candidates for the position. In Dijon it is only 1.2.

National education wanted to respond to concerns immediately. “This decline was predictable and therefore expected”Edouard Geffray, general director of school education (Dgesco), insisted during a press briefing on Wednesday 11 May.

To explain these figures, the institution highlights the competition reform that came into force in 2022: previously teacher students, who provide a large proportion of first-level candidates, as well as in the capes tests, were able to take tests at the end of Master 1. The competition was postponed until the end of Master 2 this year, some candidates have already actually tried their luck last year – and some have been accepted.

The “most vulnerable” students

“We knew there would be fewer candidatesdeciphered by Alain Frugière, Director of the National Institute for Education and Training (Inspé) in Paris and President of the Inspé Network. There are fewer students who try to compete this year and they are academically more fragile, because the best ones have already passed on the first try. »

Should it have been necessary, as in the last reform that came into force in 2013, to organize two competitive meetings in the same year? The unions claim that they asked for it, in vain. “It simply came to our notice thennuansa Alain Frugière. It is no longer the same competition as it has been postponed for a year. » Despite these difficulties, students will all be “teacher in front of them” at the beginning of the school year in september, the ministry provides both primary and secondary schools.
