With 5 million practitioners in France, chess is truly one of those historical disciplines that has revived in recent years. The explosion of online internships in 2020, together with the broadcast of Le Jeu de la Dame on Netflix, had an immediate effect on the number of licensees.

In December 2021, the FFE registered 42,000 registrants, a record. The discovery or rediscovery of chess has become a sporting practice in clubs. The performance of the French team at the international level also contributed to the enthusiasm of the general public.

The introduction of chess at school has a particular response among the educational institutions presented on the occasion of Mathematics Week, which took place from 7 to 14 March 2022 on the topic of “Mathematics in the form (s)” as this game has become an educational tool for young people.

By mobilizing logic, strategy, rigor and the ability to abstract, while facilitating the learning of citizenship through respect for rules and others, chess falls within the recommendations of the TOROSSIAN-VILLANI report and within the framework of mathematical strategy.

It is practiced from an early age and contributes to personality building by promoting attention, imagination, anticipation, judgment and self-confidence. It also finds its full place in the context of school sport in that it represents an element of culture that has an educational, social and public health function and carries the values of equal opportunities. In addition, the renewed partnership mainly affects pupils in priority educational networks and in the field who are facing difficulties at school, especially in the field of mathematics.

Class’Echecs is taking a new step to introduce 250,000 primary school children over 3 years. School teachers who volunteer for the program will have access to free training on the m @ gistère platform, and 5,000 chessboards will be distributed to 500 schools from the first year of the partnership.

The free system is possible thanks to the financial and material support provided by Crédit Mutuel Enseignant and Échiquier de la Réussite. USEP will ensure practical continuity by organizing inter-class and inter-school meetings. The research laboratory will study the impact on classes from the first year.

The acquisition of a public service delegation will also provide FFE with concrete means to strengthen its activities on two basic axes of each sports federation:

  • sports performance with a federal performance project: a performance plan for today’s and tomorrow’s French teams;
  • social performance through the implementation of the FFE national strategy, which includes the fight against violence in sport, health in sport, inclusion, disability, international influence …

Funds provided by the Ministry of Sports and the National Sports Agency will be financial, human and material for top athletes.

The activities carried out under this agreement must be monitored jointly by the MENJS and the representatives of the signatory federations.
